Afterglow is proud to announce that we are officially a member of 1% for the Planet, a global nonprofit dedicated to assisting eco- and socially-conscious companies donate one percent of their annual revenue to like-minded environmental organisations and related charities.

What is 1% for the Planet?

Founded in 2002, 1% for the Planet is a network of more than 2,000 businesses across the world and more than 4,000 nonprofits in 60 countries. 1% for the Planet’s singular mission is to connect its members with those high-impact nonprofits, under their umbrella, that most align with their own brand values and company ideals.

1% for the Planet’s members include thousands of companies, brands and millions of product lines across a wide range of products and services, the majority of whom embrace some form eco-friendly or socially-minded mission statement.  By joining 1% for the Planet, businesses benefit from access to a wide array of resources, advice and networks, helping them improve the efficiency of their environmental and community outreach – and forging powerful relationships with those on the front lines of environmentalism.

Where does the money go?

Full member businesses pledge to donate one percent of their annual gross sales (i.e. not net profit) directly to nonprofit organisations and charities of their choice. They may also contribute employee volunteer time and/or in kind product or service donations to their favoured eco-organisations or charities.

Companies can choose to support these organisations across six key areas: Climate, Food, Land, Pollution, Water and Wildlife.

To date, 1% for the Planet’s members have donated more than US$2,25 million toward environmental nonprofit solutions worldwide.  This is a meaningful difference if you consider that just three percent of worldwide philanthropy goes to environmental causes – and only five percent of that comes from corporations.  As members, we can directly support those making an effort to preserve the natural resources of our mother earth and creating a better world for all of us – human, flora, fauna –  to live in. Membership also allows employees, and customers, to take pride in their employers or brands of choice and contribute indelibly to the impact that we all need to make to preserve our planet.

Afterglow for the Planet

As Afterglow’s primary mission is to become a globally recognized, innovative sports brand with a deep commitment to sustainable production methods, and a strong social conscience that inspires people to live fitter, healthier lives, while protecting the environment. (View our Mission and Vision here ).  So our alignment with 1% for the Planet, and most importantly the causes it supports, is a no-brainer.

Afterglow is proud to announce that we are officially a member 1% for the Planet and have chosen three organisations that we feel most align with our brand values. These are:

Trees for Cities (London)
As the only UK charity working at a national and international scale to improve lives by planting greening urban areas, Trees for Cities, which is also based in our home city of London, is a cause incredibly close to Afterglow’s values and one we are ecstatic to be able to support. The greening of our urban spaces is a massively important initiative, contributing to our general feeling of well-being, reducing carbon dioxide and providing us with more places to train or chill.

Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean (United States)
The Rozalia Project seeks to develop and implement solutions to the problem of marine plastic pollution and other debris through beach clean ups, education programs and technology and solutions-based research. As the clothing industry is a major contributor to marine plastic pollution, and many of our products are made from recycled plastic bottles, theirs is a cause to which we are honoured to contribute. The less plastic out there, the better, we say.
The great minds behind the Rozalia Project are also behind the Cora Ball, designed to reduce microfibre plastic pollution in our oceans – and which Afterglow is also proud to support and is available for purchase on this website.

Toward the future

As an independent start up, Afterglow has opted to keep this number low to make the maximum impact on each, but in the future as our company grows, we hope to add more to this list.

Apart from monetary support, Afterglow will also be taking part in collaborative opportunities with the organisations we have chosen to support, through volunteering, participation and other means.  We intend to go beyond just mere donations to these entities and to be more proactive and make a genuine difference in contributing towards their success.
